Election Theory

Today we talked about 3 different algorithms dealing with Election Theory. Remember that each of these methods require the use of a preference schedule! The three algortithms discussed were: the Borda method, Runoff method, and Sequential Runoff method. Be sure that you have really clear notes on each of these processes. It is essential that you know how to follow them, but do not worry too much about how they work. You should also know the difference between plurality and majority winners. Tomorrow we will do an activity in class dealing with these different methods.

Have a great week!

Fibonacci Numbers

Leonardo Fibonacci was a cool dude. Today we discussed one of his "discoveries" (although he was really just the first to publish this finding). Fibonacci used a hypothetical situation involving rabbits to create the "Fibonacci Sequence." (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, .....) Be sure that you know how this sequence works and how to find the first few terms of the sequence.

Fibonacci numbers can be found everywhere, especially throughout nature. We looked at several examples in class today. In groups you created the famous Fibonacci Spiral, which we will put up on the wall soon. Take a look at the website tonight (the link is on the right), and look specifically at some of the objects with spirals. You will need to know this information for upcoming tests/quizzes!

Coming up:
- Tonight your only homework is to check out the website on Fibonacci
- Keep in mind that we will have a midterm very soon! More about this on Friday.

Posting for Points:

Arithmetic Series

Today we extended our knowledge from sequences to series. Series is just another word for the total sum of a sequence. Be sure that you have the equations for these topics on your chart that was given out last week.

Coming up:
- Homework: The front of the "Arithmetic Series" worksheet that was given out today. You should also respond to the posting for points question dealing with Fibonacci numbers.
- Tomorrow is the last day to make up the Test from Friday.

Arithmetic Series

Today we started talking about Arithmetic Sequences. I passed out two different handouts that you should come by my office and get if you were not in class today. One was a table for you to keep all of the equations for Sequences and Series together, and the other was your classwork/homework dealing with Arithmetic Sequences. The handout has a great example for you to reference as well as the equation. The only other term we discussed is the Common Difference. This is the difference between two numbers in a sequence. For example, in the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8 the common difference between each number would be 2. Common difference is designated by a "d" in the equation for arithmetic sequences.

Remember that you have a TEST tomorrow! The test will be cumulative!

Coming up:
- TEST tomorrow
- We will begin Arithmetic Series on Tuesday
- You will have a "midterm" test on October 17th

Posting for Points:
What is the "common difference"?

Usual Day at Unusual School

Today I answered any questions still remaining about concepts for the chapter 2 test. Please keep in mind that I will not be here Monday and Tuesday of next week, but we will still have a test on Wednesday!
After questions we put on a small classroom "play" of A Usual Day at Unusual School. The objective was to figure out who was a "bright" and who was a "brave." This was just a review of how truth tables work. Be sure you review old material because the tests are cumulative.

Coming up:
- No homework tonight!
- Tomorrow be sure to meet OUTSIDE at the picnic tables. We will then walk over to the courtyard steps by the gym! Be on time!

Group Experts

Today each of you became an expert for one section of the recent material. Sections covered in the review groups were: sec. 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3. Keep your "perfect notes" in a safe place! We will not be moving on to any new material before the next test.
Keep in mind that you should be studying NOW for the test. I will not be in class Monday or Tuesday, but the test will be Wednesday. You will have a review sheet next week and answers will be provided prior to the test.

Have a great day!

Coming Up:
- Homework: You have no homework other than studying for the test!
- Test will be one week from today (October 3rd)

Test Prep

Today we went over the homework dealing with onto and one-to-one functions, as well as ceiling and floor functions. Be sure to check your homework if you were not in class today. We did not go over any new material and we will not start anything new until after the test. That gives us several days to review (and we still have a few activities dealing with this material).

For homework everyone should generate 3 questions about the material (sets or functions) that you do not completely understand. We will begin reviewing tomorrow in preparation for the BIG TEST next week. The test will cover mainly sets and functions, but remember that the old material from propositions and fair division might be on there (as the cumulative questions). Your questions for homework can be directly about the material (ex. what is a ceiling function), or they can be book problems that you still do not understand.

Have a great day!

Coming up:
- NO HOMEWORK tonight unless you did not finish your 3 questions in class!
- We will have a big test next Friday (October 5th), or possibly Wed. (Oct. 3rd)

Posting for Points Question:
How many questions do you need to generate for homework?

Onto and One-to-One

Today we looked at onto functions and one-to-one functions. Although these two definitions can be confusing, the reference pictures on page 139 should prove to be helpful. Remember that a function is onto if every y is used, and a function is one-to-one if each y only has one arrow pointing at it. We also briefly discussed ceiling and floor functions.

Have a great week!

Coming up:
- Homework: pg. 146 #'s 8-11, 32
- Remember to make up your quiz by Wed. if you have not already
- We will have a big test next Friday (October 5th)

Posting for Points Question:
Is this function onto or one-to-one: (a, 1); (b, 2); (c, 1) Domain: {a, b, c} Range: {1, 2}

Fun Friday

Everyone seemed to do well on their functions quiz today. You will get them back on Tuesday assuming everyone has taken it by then. If you did not take the quiz, you have until Wed. to make it up.

After the quiz we watched part of Numbers dealing with Fair Division. Be sure you remember all of the old material as tests will be cumulative.

Have a great weekend!

Coming up:
- If you did not take the quiz today, you have until Wednesday!
- Monday we will begin incorporating Sets with Functions

Posting for Points Question:
Each day you will find a question here that relates to the notes from that day. You must respond to at least 3 each week to recieve credit for this portion of your homework grade. Responses are created by clicking on comment.

For today just post a comment saying HI!
